An Ap"peel"ing Activity
Urich, Joshua A.; Sasse, Elizabeth A.
Mathematics Teacher, v105 n3 p189-193 Oct 2011
This article describes a hands-on mathematics activity wherein students peel oranges to explore the surface area and volume of a sphere. This activity encourages students to make conjectures and hold mathematical discussions with both their peers and their teacher. Moreover, students develop formulas for the surface area and volume of a sphere using both informal and formal methods of proof. Finally, it may be the one activity that helps alleviate student anxiety about mathematics. (Contains 4 figures.)
