Children's Art Diary: Canvas Artists
Szekely, George
Arts & Activities, v149 n3 p40, 51 Apr 2011
The art room can become a canvas, covered in white paper from floor to ceiling. Doors, windows--even the sink--can play a role as a canvas. One may begin by dressing everything in white. When students get dressed in white paper clothing, watch out--they have become walking canvases ready for painting. Beyond the art room, one imagines draping buildings, trees and hillsides in white--all to create new artists' canvases. Appreciating adult art in class is fine, but students need to see "themselves" as artists, and be initiated into an art world that still welcomes innovators. They dream of new canvases, ways and places to display colors. Central to a painting session is the opportunity for invention and discovery. The author stresses that art teaching is freeing students to question and invent, to see art in everything, and to rethink the idea of a painting surface.
