Changing the Face of the Academy: Innovative Approaches to Faculty Recruitment
Brown, Ara C.; Greenwood, James J.
Independent School, v69 n2 Win 2010
With the ever-changing landscape of America, diversity, equity, and social justice issues continue to be of great importance in independent schools. Undeniably, diversity work holds benefits--which is why it has a place in so many mission statements--but it also poses significant challenges. In particular, the recruitment and retention of faculty of color continues to be a persistent point of concern. Indeed, while many schools hold a goal of increasing the numbers of faculty of color, only a small percentage of schools has had marked success. How can an independent school recruit and retain a faculty that better represents the diversity of its student body and society? This article presents ideas and practices observed within student recruitment that might be successfully adapted to faculty recruitment in order to yield a more diverse faculty body.
