This article is an excerpt from "Lawrence Kohlberg's Approach to Moral Education." It refers several times to Kohlberg's "six stages of moral development." Stages 3 and 4 belong to the second level of moral development, which Kohlberg calls "conventional." At stage 3, one becomes aware of conventions as one sees what is right in terms of living up to the expectations that others have of one's actions and one's motives. At stage 4, one begins to develop a conscience and an awareness of the social system. Scarsdale students come from well-to-do homes, and family and community socialization provides firm norms against stealing. Since 1978, when the just community approach was inaugurated, the only episodes of stealing in the A School involved the disappearance of a few students' sandwiches from the communal refrigerator. While stealing was not an issue in the A School, another form of injustice was--cheating. This article reports an analogous development of a trust norm in the A School against cheating.
