One College, One World: A Small Town Community College and the Impact of Globalization
Frost, Robert A.
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v35 n9 p710-723 2011
Globalization is a highly contested notion of the rapid changes taking place through the movement of labor, capital, communications, and information transcending all previous notions of borders and similarly defined territories. Historically, community college missions have been limited by their district borders. This study presents findings from interviews at a small, midwestern community college that indicate how community colleges provide human resources and social development functions that support private industries. This indicates that the effects of globalization at the local level are being offset at public expense. The paper concludes with a reconsideration of the community college mission in the early 21st century.
