Working Like Real Scientists

"Real" science is about formulating and trying to solve practical and conceptual problems on the basis of shared beliefs about the world. Scientists build theories and test hypotheses by observation and experiment. They try their best to eliminate personal bias, and are "extremely canny in their acceptance of the claims of others" (Ziman, 2000). In this article the author describes the simple way in which one teacher succeeded in creating a science process in her classroom, with great benefits in terms of learning and engagement for the children. Understanding how she created this process should help teachers grasp the norms of scientific work. (Contains 2 figures.)
