Database Marketplace 2010: Feast and Famine
Tenopir, Carol; Baker, Gayle; Grogg, Jill
Library Journal, v135 n9 p32-34 May 2010
With fancy new software developments and growth in both the richness of content and delivery options for information resources, the Database Marketplace 2010 is a feast for buyers. Unfortunately, institutional budget cuts may force more of a famine mentality--with belt-tightening for most, and only purchases that are life-sustaining being served in many libraries. The global economic downturn continues to be of concern to content providers and librarians alike. Of some 50 database publishers responding to the 2010 database marketplace survey, 15 reported that they had fewer new subscriptions in 2008-2009 than they did in 2006-2007. And one-third revealed they had more subscription cancellations in 2008-2009 than in the previous year. While only a handful of producers said they were cutting back on new product creation, that was not the case with CABI, which decided the wiser course was to enhance its current offerings. Even those who have not seen major cuts or nonrenewals from library customers agree that the threat of library resource famine is not over yet.
