The Ethiopian Orphanage Project was the brainchild of a prominent pediatrician who, through her foundation and private practice, has been saving the physical and emotional lives of children for years, both in the United States and abroad, with a focus on HIV+ orphans in developing countries. Three years ago, after introducing ARVs (antiretroviral drugs) to one particular orphanage in Ethiopia with the local nickname that was something to the effect of the "House of the Devil," the average death rate from HIV-related illnesses went from two children per week to none. This inspired the doctor to go further than healing only the children's bodies; the next step was to heal the children's souls. This idea resulted in sending four renaissance theatre/film artists [the author, Linda, (big) John, and (little) John] to create a theatre piece with and for the orphans to perform at their National Theatre. In this article, the author presents excerpts from a journal she kept that documents the month-long theatre project with HIV+ orphans in Addis Ababa.
