What Makes a Good Social Studies Lesson?
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v23 n3 p26-28 Jan-Feb 2011
The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) curriculum standards offer a set of principles for creating good social studies lessons, units of study, and curriculums. This article presents excerpts from "National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies: A Framework for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment." The revised standards (published in 2010) offer a sharper focus than the original standards (published in 1994). Chapter 4 in the book presents learning expectations for the "Early Grades." It describes the purposes of each of the ten themes of the Social Studies Curriculum Standards, offers key questions for exploration that are related to the theme, and identifies what learners need to understand. The excerpts presented in this article address the theme "time, continuity, and change." (Contains 1 note.)
