Peer Educators Responding to an Institutional Challenge: Off-Campus Student Services
Hintz, James R.
New Directions for Student Services, n133 p87-95 Spr 2011
Commuter students make up an overwhelming majority of the college student population. At the same time, the amount of research on commuter students is minuscule compared to that of residential students. The characteristics of the commuter student subgroup that is referenced in this chapter can be described as living independent of guardians or direct supervision. These students have typically recently moved off-campus or at most lived off-campus for one to two years and possess limited knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of community living with little oversight. The commuter student subgroup is referred to as "off-campus students." Peer education programs have emerged at many institutions to address issues and challenges that off-campus students face and cause while living in neighborhoods adjacent to colleges and universities. In this article, the author provides an overview of off-campus peer education programs, describes the role of off-campus peer educators and discusses the challenges of developing and managing off-campus peer education programs. The author stresses that utilizing peer education programs to address the issues and challenges faced by students who live off-campus has shown promising results at institutions that have invested in them.
