Accountability and Institutional Effectiveness in the Community College
Ewell, Peter T.
New Directions for Community Colleges, n153 p23-36 Spr 2011
Heightened national goals for degree attainment in the United States means increasing prominence for community colleges, which entails greater scrutiny in the form of accountability. Technology and a new generation of accountability measures appropriate to the distinctive community college mission are available to meet this challenge. This article sketches emerging trends in the accountability dimension of institutional effectiveness for community colleges by reviewing the motives of the various players and their specific accountability interests in community colleges, describing the challenges that community colleges face in responding to these demands, and elaborating on some new directions that have emerged in accountability reporting over the past few years for community college systems and institutions.
