Democracy, Moral Imagination, and the Development of Responsibility: New Cornerstones for Teacher Education
Blumenfeld-Jones, Donald S.
Teacher Education and Practice, v22 n4 p439-442 Fall 2009
Liberation of self and society is the point of democracy. What does one need in teacher education and teaching to fulfill this democratic vision? For John Dewey, teacher educators need to practice associated living in the classroom. Talking about it will not fulfill the charge. They need to enable experiences of deliberation, thoughtful planning, and talking/working with one another. Preservice teachers can experience this and learn to build their own classrooms as democratic spaces so that their learners can participate in a democratic society. In the face of an increasingly globalized, centralized, hierarchical, anonymous society, one needs an education conscious about the idea of connection with others and responsibility for others as democratic ethical dispositions. To foster democracy, teacher educators must provide experiences that will enable their learners to feel such responsibility and connection. They must provide opportunities to honor the vulnerable infinity of the Other, a vulnerable infinity that calls out to them. In doing so, the development of a moral imagination begins and in this, the author argues, lays the heart of a democratic life. (Contains 3 notes.)
