Teach Efficient Production with Modular Fixturing Pallets
Creger, Don W.; Payne, Brent A.
Tech Directions, v70 n1 p19-21 Aug 2010
Advances in technology have yielded computer numerical control (CNC) machines and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software that saves time and increases productivity in today's industrial world. Training students to understand and use these technologies has become a key ingredient in preparing them for work in industry. Teachers of machining and CNC have a lot on their plates. Unfortunately, one important aspect of their program that they often overlook is work holding. The authors recommend introducing students to the flexible and highly productive system of modular fixturing using pallets. In this article, the authors detail the fixturing system which gives educators a low-cost way to create their own accessory systems for teaching more aspects of machining and CNC programming. The system also encourages students to be creative and introduces them to the very efficient use of pallets in industry today. (Contains 3 figures.)
