From Tragedy to a Supportive Partnership for a Family with Disabilities
Vargas, Claudia Maria
Exceptional Parent, v41 n2 p22-23 Feb 2011
Onesimo Giron had always been admired in his community for his generosity, compassion, happy disposition, and willingness to help others. He was deaf from birth and had faced a variety of challenges throughout his life. Even so, he had forged a place for himself as a dedicated husband, father, a wonderful gardener and a valued family and community member. His bond with and dedication to his younger daughter, Gladis--who has a rare, but severe and complex disability that also poses mobility challenges--were admired by all who knew him. On a fateful June night, Onesimo met an accident that took his life. Although the community embraced the family in the wake of their tragic loss, many challenges remained. This is the story of a caring reaction by others that afforded Gladis and her family enhanced mobility and security in the months since their loss. When Dean Westwood, Director of the Center on Self-Determination, Child Development and Rehabilitation Center at the Oregon Health & Science University, learned of the story of Gladis and her family, he was moved to help. He explained the situation to Performance Mobility, Inc. The company, following on its commitment to community involvement and compassionate care, came to the rescue. This article describes how the Center teams up with Performance Mobility, Inc. to help Gladis and her family.
