A Lens on Student Learning
Gates, Claire; Barton, Rhonda
Principal Leadership, v11 n4 p46-49 Dec 2010
The Kent School District in Kent, Washington, adopted the use of video study groups (VSGs) during the 2008-09 school year to help teachers apply research-based strategies to support struggling math students. This form of embedded professional development has been around since the 1960s but is getting renewed attention because video equipment is more-readily available and schools and districts are searching for ways to engage teachers in authentic examination of their practice. The VSGs provide a collaborative process for focusing educators' attention on student learning. The experiences of the teachers in the Kent School District and in Lebanon (OR) Community Schools illustrate how VSGs provide a platform for professional learning that can contribute to reflection on practice and deeper understanding of teaching and learning.
