Feather Boas in Real Analysis
Barnes, Julie
PRIMUS, v21 n2 p130-141 2011
Several years ago, the author noticed that her students were having trouble understanding the formal definitions for convergence of sequences, continuity of functions, and uniform convergence of functions. To her students, these definitions were just a bunch of symbols with little to no meaning. She drew diagrams, but students had trouble seeing what it means to look at smaller and smaller regions. She used technology to zoom in, but then students lost track of the big picture, forgetting that there was a function outside of the window they were observing. In this article, the author describes how she uses feather boas, yarn, and doorknob hangers to help students better understand the definitions of convergent sequences, continuous functions, and uniformly continuous functions. (Contains 13 figures.)
