A Program Showcase: Pine Grove School, Falmouth, Maine
Kalinowski, Michael
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n194 p84-85 Jul-Aug 2010
Since 1809, there has almost always been a school in Macworth Point (now Falmouth), Maine, just north of Portland. In 1916 a brick, one-room schoolhouse was built on this property and named Pine Grove School. Unfortunately, it burned down a few days before the school opened and was rebuilt, and then expanded in 1941. In 1984, after a brief closure, Barbara (BJ) Fifield and Paula Silsby purchased it and restored the building, opening the Pine Grove Child Development Center the next year. It serves a total of 96 children per week. Accredited by NAEYC, the school has also received the highest level (Step 4) from Maine's Child Care Quality Rating System. Each of the three classrooms holds a maximum of 24 children, offering a 1:6 ratio in the preschool programs and an 1:8 ratio in the pre-primary and kindergarten programs. There is low staff turnover at this program, with several staff members having worked there more than 10 years, and two over 20 years. This year it celebrates its 25th birthday. This article showcases the early childhood program of Pine ;Grove, which follows a modified Montessori approach.
