Winter in the UK has, in recent years, brought a significant amount of snow and cold weather. This was the case while the author was a trainee teacher on placement at a rural primary school in Dartmoor early in 2010. The day started promisingly with the class looking at the weather forecast on the interactive whiteboard and having a short discussion about their experiences of snow. Sometime mid-morning it started to snow. The moment the children noticed, there was a great deal of excitement and they abandoned their work and ran to the windows to have a closer look. Unfortunately, instead of capitalising on the children's excitement and exploiting a fantastic learning opportunity, the class teacher told children to return to their places and continue working. In this article, the author offers ideas to help teachers make the most of this unusual weather. She presents activities that are intended to provide active, collaborative and fun learning experiences that children will remember for years. Experiences such as these will help children to remember what they have been taught and to appreciate the usefulness of this knowledge outside school.
