How Science Works: Bringing the World of Science into the Classroom through Innovative Blended Media Approaches

During the past three years, a team from the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Salford, the University of York, Glasshead and Teachers TV, has been working in collaboration to develop a series of blended media resources to support the teaching and learning of How Science Works (HSW) at Key Stages 3 and 4 (age 11-16). Baseline research involving questionnaires and focus groups identified that teachers wanted CPD that would develop their knowledge and understanding of all the components of HSW; would provide them with exemplars of best practice, particularly for more challenging pedagogical approaches, both through visual and printed media; and would offer the opportunity to reflect professionally and plan implementation in teams. They wanted visual media resources and curriculum materials that would enable them to develop all aspects of HSW with their students, which exemplified good practice and would be easy to implement in their classrooms. The project thus aimed to produce high quality blended media resources, including TV programmes, curriculum and professional development materials and support, to exemplify how to approach the HSW elements of the new science curriculum, and help teachers to draw upon real scientists and their work when teaching. Phase I of the project focused on Key Stage 4 (age 14-16) and Phase II, Key Stage 3 (age 11-14). Each Phase adopted a similar model, producing three TV programmes for students; one CPD programme for teachers; additional online CPD programmes or video clips; and curriculum materials to support and be integrated with the student programmes and CPD materials.
