Langille-Hoppe, Mary Marguerite; Maxey, Monique; Gonzalez, Judith R.; Terrell, Stephanie
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v4 n3 p125-138 2010
The purpose of this exploratory study was to gain a deeper understanding of how individuals in the Ozarks region of Missouri understand issues of poverty within their unique geographical, economic, and social contexts. The goal was to bridge the needs of poor communities and local organizational resources. Definitions and themes that emerged from data analysis included poverty as persecution, values and coping, poverty as mindset, and strategies for community programs. Recommendations for social service organizations included the creation of a federal advocacy organization to ensure programs provide assistance without victimization, sensitivity training for agencies, incorporation of role models from local communities, awareness of community values, and job skills training.
