Estimates suggest that up to 25 percent of the 40,000 new cases of HIV that occur in the United States each year may involve individuals under the age of twenty-two. This calls into question whether preventive education does indeed accomplish its intended purpose. Although there has been a host of recent additions to the wealth of HIV/AIDS prevention models, the majority of school-based models remain unchanged. In terms of HIV/AIDS prevention, most concur that education is the most effective plan of action against the disease. This widely agreed-upon strategy, however , is not reflected in the currently weak state of preventive education. Social workers possess a broad range of skills and knowledge that largely go unused with respect to HIV/sex education. This article examines the perceptions of school social workers regarding a possible expansion of the school social worker's role in HIV/sex education. (Contains 5 tables and 1 figure.)
