Not without a Fight
Davies, Peter
Adults Learning, v22 n2 p30 Oct 2010
It isn't the first time City Lit Principal Peter Davies has had to weather a financial storm. This time, he says, it's different--the proposed cuts to funding for adult learning are likely to prove disastrous. Intelligence suggests City Lit might face cuts of 40% in adult funding and even closer to 100% if the Adult Safeguarded Learning budget is removed. The impact will depend on the scale of the cuts. With an equitable reduction of 10% to 15% over four years, the main impact would be equivalent increases in fees. If the cut is 25%, it could be forced to cut some or all of its "force for good" areas, which make a significant financial loss, including provision for the deaf and for homeless people. If it really is 40%, it would be impossible to keep its current balance and mix of provision and a number of different options would need to be considered. Davies believes City Lit has a fight on its hands. City Lit has e-mailed 45,000 of its learners asking them to write to MPs to tell them why adult education is important to them. Learners have responded very well with many exceptional stories.
