Jeffrey, Scott; Alvarez, Jaime
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v34 n11 p945-947 2010
The Geospatial Applications Program at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), located five miles west of downtown Baltimore, Maryland, provides comprehensive instruction in geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing and global positioning systems (GPS). Geospatial techniques, which include computer-based mapping and remote sensing, are used for decision-making in fields such as business, marketing, homeland security, public policy, environment, engineering, public health, and criminal justice by identifying patterns between maps and data. A unique aspect of the CCBC Geospatial Applications program is the incorporation of client-based projects in all courses beyond the introductory level. The Geospatial Applications program is a statewide program that offers an associate of applied science degree for students planning to transfer to a four-year institution as well as introductory and advanced certificates. The Introduction to Geospatial Applications Certificate is designed for individuals who need immediate skills to enter the geospatial/geographic information systems workplace or for those who are already in the field and need to enhance their skills. The Advanced Geospatial Applications Certificate provides instruction in advanced spatial analysis and project design and management.
