An emerging trend in physical education curriculum has been sparked by the influx of a relatively new technology to the market referred to as Active Gaming or Exergaming. Exergaming has become a new buzzword identified by Popular Science as one of the ten new terms predicted to enter mainstream vocabulary in the next few years. Defined as video games that provide physical activity or exercise through interactive play, these games go beyond simple hand/finger movements as the primary interface and require the user to apply full body motion to participate in virtual sports, group fitness exercise, or other interactive physical activities. Multiple types of game controllers, ranging from foot touch pads (as in the popular Dance Dance Revolution game) to motion sensor video cameras (such as Eye Toy), require the user to move and interact with the game, as opposed to the traditional sedentary types of games. Although the concept of integrating physical activity with video game applications has been around for several years, the recent revolution began with the launch of the video arcade game Dance Dance Revolution in the late 1990's. This technology continues to develop and is now finding its way into school gymnasiums as part of physical education curriculum's.
