With an election looming and big cuts to public spending on the way, policy proposals that involve spending large sums of new money are unlikely to be well received by politicians. So what questions for candidates might adult educators have in their pockets and put to prospective parliamentarians as they join the throng in the local school? The Workers' Educational Association, led by Richard Bolsin, has already put together an excellent pack on this. The questions themselves need to be short, and graspable by candidates for whom "lifelong learning" might as well be a phrase from Mars. The author presents three questions which might stick in their minds. These are: (1) Do you think adult education is a good investment?; (2) Do you oppose discrimination against part-time students?; and (3) If crime is an issue, does prison education have a role in dealing with it? These questions all expect the answer "yes", but they invite something further in the way of response and commitment.
