Neuromuscular Disorders: A Primer for School Psychologists
Augustyniak, Kristine; Kilanowski-Press, Lisa
Communique, v37 n4 p23-25 Dec 2008
Improved medical care and legislative mandates have increased the degree to which students with neuromuscular disorders (NMD) are educated in general education environments. However, many practitioners remain largely unaware of the diverse presentations of disorders and challenges that students with NMD face. Despite the fact that school psychologists may lack specific medical knowledge regarding NMD's, they are well positioned to assist students with NMD to access the curriculum. Given the numerous social, emotional, and pain-related challenges stemming from NMD that negatively influence educational performance, school psychologists can serve as valuable contributors to informal intervention, IEP development, consultation, counseling, and collaboration efforts. In this article, the authors talk about neuromuscular disorders and discuss some considerations for school psychologists. Given the low incidence of the disabilities and potentially limited exposure to working with NMD populations, school psychologists and other school-based service providers may need additional training to provide effective services. The authors offer suggestions to increase quality of supports provided to students with neuromuscular disorders.
