Across all fields of psychology within the United States, many mental health and educational professionals involved in the assessment of school-age children are not members of a minority population. As a result, these professionals are unfamiliar with the diverse cultural and linguistic characteristics of the individuals that they serve. This problem is compounded by the rapidly growing and heterogeneous student population of English language learners (ELLs). While there are over 400 different languages spoken in the United States, Spanish-speaking students make up 77% of the ELL school-age population. Clearly, the need for psychologists who are suitably prepared and knowledgeable about Spanish and Hispanic cultures is large, and is not being met with existing personnel within a school or mental health systems. In order to address this pressing need, the Ecuadorian Professional Preparation Program (EPPP) was created to enhance each participant's ability to work effectively with ELL children, youth, and families in multicultural settings. This article describes the mission and features of the EPPP.
