This article features Jordan Thomas, who lost his feet in a spear fishing accident in August 2005. It describes how Thomas turned his own loss into a way to help kids get the prosthetics they need. Just three weeks after losing his feet, Thomas filed the paperwork for the Jordan Thomas Foundation, which aims to raise funds for prosthetic limbs for children whose families can't afford them. Thomas continues to champion for children in the U.S. including the Foundation's first beneficiary, Alaina, who lost both her legs--one above the knee, the other below--in a farming accident when she was 2. In 2009, Thomas earned several awards for his selfless work, including the Association of Fundraising Professionals' Changing Our World/William R. Simms Award for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy, the National Courage Award from the Minneapolis-based Courage Center for people with disabilities, and CNN, which chose him as one of its Top 10 Heroes from more than 9,000 nominations. In May, Thomas traveled to New York to accept the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He was the youngest recipient ever. Thomas' experience has given him an appreciation for life and a unique perspective most 21-year-old college students do not have.
