Take a Stand for Standing
Labandz, Stephenie
Exceptional Parent, v40 n7 p47-49 Jul 2010
As a school-based physical therapist, the author sees children with a wide variety of diagnoses affecting their mobility and motor function. Supported standing is an important part of the routines of those who are unable to stand independently due to issues affecting the neuromuscular system. Being eye-to-eye with their peers and interacting with their environments in an upright position is obviously a positive experience based on the smiles she sees from the students, their peers, and the school staff. As if the smiles were not evidence enough, a body of research shows that standing with help from a simple piece of durable medical equipment yields long-lasting benefits physically, mentally, and emotionally. Standing programs provide multiple health benefits to individuals who do not stand under their own power and spend the majority of their time sitting or lying down because of weakness, abnormal tone, or developmental delays. Flexibility is maintained or improved, and contractures at the hips, knees, and ankles are prevented. Spasticity is decreased. The kidneys and bladder drain better with assistance from gravity.
