Universal design is the design of environments and products to be used by people of all ages and abilities. The goal is to use design to reduce physical effort, regardless of some of the frailties that may be acquired due to an accident, health, or age. EasyLiving Homes[R] is a non-profit organization that advocates making all homes visitable and certifies builders that do so. EasyLiving Homes[R] requires four things of their builders: (1) a stepless entry; (2) a bedroom and an accessible bath on the first level; (3) wider hallways; and (4) 36" wide doorways. Universal design can be used in new or renovated homes and its design features can start on the exterior of a home and be found in every room. This article presents the universal design features of specific rooms in the house including, the entryway, kitchen, living/family room, bedrooms, and baths.
