Leadership for Service Learning
Billig, Shelley H.
Principal Leadership, v10 n6 p26-31 Feb 2010
Service learning is a promising practice, but like other instructional practices, it must be done well to produce positive outcomes. This author has found that following five "rules" of service learning will likely result in improved academic engagement and positive academic, civic, and social outcomes among students. Energy and collaboration among faculty members will increase, as will the service's measurable effect on the community. The rules will result in more school-community partnerships, greater media attention, and more community support. This article offers those five rules for service learning leadership: (1) Do service learning well; (2) Meet a real community need; (3) Help all service learning participants identify and document a community need and measure impact when the service has been completed so that documentation of community impact is established; (4) Allocate appropriate resources and support for high quality practice; and (5) Be visible in one's support.
