In this article, the author describes an art project intended for high-school students to create a three-dimensional design using a Styrofoam. The students were asked to find and take photos of architectural details, such as decorative columns, and use the photograph as inspiration in their drawings. The drawings served as a "blueprint" to help students make the transition from working on a two-dimensional surface to a three-dimensional form. This project allows students to experience a high degree of success. It also provides students the opportunity to practice and develop interpersonal, decision-making and lifelong learning skills. It engages students in critical problem solving and critical thinking. With active participation and construction of knowledge through progressively structured steps, students learn through a variety of art-making skills while developing good work habits. This lesson may be connected to language arts and social studies.
