Art Across The Curriculum: A (Not-So) Private Eye
Sartorius, Tara Cady
Arts & Activities, v147 n3 p26-28 Apr 2010
Back in the 18th century, it was popular to give one's lover a locket containing a painted image of one's eye. Possibly this was a way of keeping privacy between two secret lovers. Or it may have been a way of keeping close to the gaze of a loved one while spending time apart. The pendants may have included a lock of hair or other tiny element hinting at the otherwise unidentifiable "owner" of the eye. In this article, the author discusses Rene Magritte, a Belgian artist, and his eye paintings--"L'Oeil" and "The False Mirror." The author also provides some suggested lessons about the eye for science, language arts, visual arts and math, and about art and war for social studies.
