You're Hired! Successful Communication Makes All the Difference
Layng, Jacqueline M.
Communication Teacher, v21 n2 p54-57 Apr 2007
This paper describes an assignment that gives students the ability to improve written and verbal communication abilities, which they will be using throughout their lives, by enhancing communication skills and competencies in a class setting. It is a two-part assignment that begins with a discussion on how to produce a successful cover letter and resume. The second part of the assignment is having the students participate in an interview observed by their fellow students, which is followed by a critique session discussing their strengths and weaknesses. This activity is unique because it combines the two major components of a job search, creating a successful cover letter and resume as well as practicing and interview into one unit. Most job search activities include only one component at a time and do not combine the two activities, but treat them as individual assignments. This activity simulates searching for a job as close to real life as possible and uses the cover letter and resume produced in the interviewing segment of the activity.
