Reviewing Organizational Communication Concepts with the Movie "Office Space"
Bunz, Ulla
Communication Teacher, v20 n2 p36-39 Apr 2006
Undergraduate students often memorize a keyword or definition for an exam without a deeper understanding or the ability to apply the meaning of the concept. While using examples during a lecture may help, the combination of movies and verbal review has been shown to be a valuable instructional tool, increasing recall (Elischberger & Roebers, 2001) and overall long-term performance (Choi, 2000). Zorn (1991) has shown that movies can be used effectively in the Communication classroom, providing both nonverbal and verbal cues that add up to a richer teaching context than written material alone. This article presents an activity that uses a popular movie, "Office Space," for exam review in organizational communication courses. Through active involvement in the review process and use of popular entertainment media, students train to understand concepts in context, which helps them internalize the meaning of key terms and their applicability, rather than just memorizing the book definition which may be quickly forgotten right after the exam.
