Self-Help Books about Communication and the Communication Course: An Exercise in Assessing Popular Notions of Communication Using Theory
Duthler, Kirk W.
Communication Teacher, v21 n1 p30-34 Jan 2007
This activity is designed to help build a bridge between the practical and the theoretical and lay the groundwork for students to assess and evaluate both communication theory and popular press titles. This activity is very effective in demonstrating that communication theory can be practical and applicable to real-life advice about work, home, and in everyday encounters. It can be adopted by a variety of different communication courses including: persuasion, interpersonal (family, gender, and/or intercultural), organizational or small-group communication, and other communication courses. Several possible outcomes for this activity are discussed. [A list of references and suggested readings is included.]
