Is It Possible to Benefit from the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development?
Malhadas, Ziole Zanotto
Applied Environmental Education and Communication, v4 n3 p257-259 2005
Sustainability does not have the same connotations for the Brazilian people as it does for many Europeans or North Americans. For the poorest communities of Brazil, sustainability means having enough food, safe shelter, and access to health services, and these depend upon getting a job, and having a job depends on education--to be able to learn enough to be employable. Therefore, the author believes that it is important to elaborate a specific action plan for the Latin American implementation of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). The author mentions that the most crucial challenge is a deficient educational system. In this article, the author discusses the most effective means to identify and to apply the best strategies to promote and implement education for sustainable development in Brazil. The author hopes to see government agencies and national associations offer effective support to facilitate the DESD success by empowering all the formal and nonformal educators, and encouraging them to elaborate and implement efficient educational curricula and programs.
