The Transformative Power of Piano Improvisation
Roemischer, Jessica
Exceptional Parent, v40 n3 p30-31 Mar 2010
Established a half-century ago, Riverbrook Residence, home to 23 women with developmental disabilities, is the oldest facility of its kind in New England, and perhaps in the country. Indeed, Riverbrook's executive director Joan Burkhard's vision, together with the care and dedication of the staff and the women's families, have created a rare and special place where women with disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy, can trust and let go, supported in every dimension of life. Burkhard had hired the author as the new piano instructor. In this article, she describes her first experience working with people with disabilities and the success of their debut performance, entitled, "Flying Free: Music without Limits," which took place at a small concert hall in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
