Demystifying Response Papers
Gump, Steven E.
College Teaching, v58 n1 p38 Jan-Mar 2010
Response papers are usually brief, recurring assignments, often posted to online course management systems or virtual learning environments, wherein students are free to comment on any aspects of the assigned readings for a class or sequence of class meetings. They are typically to be written prior to the class meetings where the readings in question will be discussed. From the perspective of the instructors, assigning response papers assures that at least some students will come to class prepared to discuss the readings for that session. This article discusses the purpose of response papers and their expectations. The author presents some suggestions he offers students for the reaction portion.
