Living the "Tipping Point": Concurrent Teacher Leader and Principal Preparation
Hambright, W. Grant; Franco, Myra Suzanne
Education, v129 n2 p267-273 Win 2008
In the 2007 edition of the NCPEA Yearbook, Zigler and Allen allude to the principalship and its associated training as being at a "tipping point," a reference to Malcom Gladwell's (2000) book, "The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Difference" (2007, p. 139). Zigler and Allen contend the current principal paradigm is too complex and that perhaps a shared leadership paradigm warrants consideration. They propose that this shared leadership among teacher leader programs and principal preparation programs may be a tipping point for modeling dual instructional leadership efforts in PK-12 schools. This article describes past and present teacher leader program improvement initiatives at one of the universities cited in the Zigler article, underscoring the tipping point premise. The program emerged as a specific response to local schools' professional development needs for teachers and future principals, and then evolved into a program for classroom teachers who did not want to leave their classrooms. Coming full circle, new demands for higher education accountability provided yet another tipping point for a teacher leader program merged with the preparation for principal licensure. Tipping points both in content and context of the program have contributed to this teacher leader program's sustainability.
