Hiring Practices Initiative: Uncovering an Untapped Employment Pool
Mulvihill, Patrick; Repetto, Jeanne B.; Andrews, Drew; Gritz, Sheila
ERS Spectrum, v26 n2 p13-19 Spr 2008
Through current hiring practices, many school districts may be missing an untapped pool of potential employees--individuals with disabilities. In this article, the authors describe the Hiring Practice Initiative (HPI) and its implementation in 17 Florida school districts. The Hiring Practice Initiative Project goals are to: (a) increase the numbers of students/adults with disabilities, including individuals with developmental disabilities, being hired by school districts, and (b) create "systems change" within hiring practices of school districts. As a result of the efforts of individual school districts working with HPI, the number of students and adults with disabilities employed by school districts increased, and many employment barriers were removed. The authors conclude the article with implications for school districts and local government groups. (Contains 1 table.)
