The Focus Group Initiative (FGI) at North Delta Secondary School (NDSS) began in 2001 with the long-term goal of giving the kids an opportunity not only to demonstrate their leadership abilities, but also to use those skills to improve whatever school or community projects they were involved in. Once students were trained to be focus group facilitators and they began to train each other, much as teachers teach each other, they began to listen to one another, to understand one another, and to make recommendations for school improvement. The process of teaching each other, of being responsible for conducting focus groups, synthesizing the information, and developing conclusions was paramount. Students were accountable to each other and to the various community groups who hired them. The original plan was to have about 100 facilitators trained within five years. However, this program exceeded all of its expectations. Not only did it teach the students about themselves, but it also became an opportunity for the students of North Delta to contribute to and enrich the community with student-led projects. Over the years, the students have run district-wide student conferences; made documentaries about the FGI program; developed three-day student leadership camps; held focus groups for community groups on such diverse topics as school leaving issues, suicide prevention, motivation etc.; made countless public presentations to school student groups, international conferences, National Staff Development Council (NSDC) conferences; and conducted Professional Development Days for teachers where they were the presenters.
