Decision Making in Hiring: Intercollegiate Athletics Coaches and Staff
Harrison, C. Keith; Lapchick, Richard E.; Janson, Neza K.
New Directions for Institutional Research, n144 p93-101 Win 2009
Although the concern for fostering opportunities for women and people of color in college athletics expanded under the leadership of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) president Myles Brand, significant challenges in hiring decisions remain. Brand said, "Though there has been some modest recent progress, there is an intolerable lack of head football coaches who are African-American in Division I, II, and III, including especially the high-profile Division I-A level. There is an egregious lack of women and minority athletics directors and conference commissioners in all divisions." In terms of decision making in hiring, informal networks are a natural part of mobility patterns of individuals seeking to ascend in the coaching profession, and it creates what is known as hiring trees, which are an intricate part of the coaching profession and have historically benefited majority (white) access versus minority (people of color) opportunities. While some minorities and women are "players" in the majority hiring trees, the lack of women and minorities in the administration, coaching, and staffing of intercollegiate athletics is a persistent problem. This chapter discusses three main reports that describe the movement of staff, coaches, and administrators in college athletics: (1) the Racial and Gender Report Card; (2) the Hiring Report Card; and (3) the Women in Intercollegiate Sport Longitudinal National Study. These reports have tracked the hiring and retention of intercollegiate athletics staff, coaches, and administrators, rating the performance of specific organizations. These reports highlight the data that reflects hiring decisions in intercollegiate athletics. Policy recommendations and directions for future research are also provided.
