This article presents a story of James, an elementary student who was recently mainstreamed into a regular education classroom for science and now struggles to succeed in his new environment. It also describes how the New Tools reclaiming intervention puts him on the right track to making new friends. James is a ten-year-old African American fifth-grade boy who was placed in a self-contained classroom for youth with emotional impairments. James presents as an immature, needy boy who demands a great deal of attention. Using a "circle chart" helped present a visual picture to James about the ways that feelings lead to behaviors which lead to consequences. The author discusses how the New Tools reclaiming intervention was used to James through six stages: (1) drain off; (2) timeline; (3) central issue; (4) insight; (5) new skills; and (6) transition.
