Why Education Needs the Arts
Mason, Sophie Yuen; Connolly, Mike
Principal Leadership, v10 n3 p30-34 Nov 2009
Back in 2005 when the authors decided to start a dance program at Saigon South International School, they recognized that much more could be expected of their graduates than that they excel in one or two academic disciplines. They were convinced that a strong fine arts program that centered on dance was essential to helping students develop the skills and dispositions that they would need to lead purposeful lives as global citizens. If a country wants to be globally competitive in the future, it must help its young people develop their creativity, innovation, synthesis, artistry, and empathy, rather than push them to get higher scores on TIMMS and PISA tests. In this article, the authors describe the development of their dance program and discuss the importance of the arts in education.
