Death, illness, divorce, abuse--any degree of loss is unpleasant to discuss, unpleasant to think about. Yet, no one is exempt from the misfortunes that accompany life's journey. This includes gifted children, who at times may be perceived as self-sufficient and smart enough to figure out their own problems even if they are overwhelmingly upset (Peterson, 2006). However, due to their unique social and emotional needs, it is gifted children who during times of sadness may require differential support the most. This article discusses why gifted children need intervention during times of grief and offers strategies to help them cope. (Contains 1 table.)
