Defining What Works
McClenney, Kay
Community College Journal, v80 n1 p20-21 Aug-Sep 2009
There is a sea change occurring in community colleges. It involves institutional leaders, faculty, and student services professionals. It is evident in campus-level discussions, conference sessions, and proliferating publications and its primary beneficiaries are students. The change is the increasing occurrence of honest conversations prompted by data about student success in colleges. Data that depict students' academic progress, their engagement in purposeful educational experiences, their attainment of key milestones, certificates, and degrees. Data about the effectiveness of strategies designed to improve outcomes. Data that show where colleges excel and where they have substantial room for improvement. In this article, the author explains why evidence-based reforms are critical to the future of community colleges and discusses the importance of building a "culture of evidence".
