Alverno College
Wagner, Virginia
New Directions for Student Services, n127 p7-12 Fall 2009
Alverno College is a private, liberal arts college located in a residential neighborhood on the southwest side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In fall 2008, the student body numbered 2,783, and there were 231 resident students. The student body is highly diverse (34% minority), and most students commute to campus for their classes. The culture at Alverno is distinguished by a focus on student learning, a commitment to quality improvement, and collaboration. What distinguishes Alverno from most other colleges is its ability-based curriculum and assessment process, a unique approach to teaching and learning that was initiated in 1973. Alverno is known for its ability-based curriculum, its use of performance assessment across the curriculum, and its focus on self-assessment. This chapter provides a glimpse of student affairs assessment at Alverno College including a specific example of assessment, tips to implementing assessment at an institution, and barriers encountered when implementing the process at Alverno College.
