Challenging one's brain is the beginning of making great art. Tangrams are a great way to keep students thinking about their latest art project long after leaving the classroom. A tangram is a Chinese puzzle. The earliest known reference to tangrams appears in a Chinese book dated 1813, but the puzzles existed long before that date. The puzzle consists of seven geometric pieces called tans, which fit together to form a variety of interesting shapes. The objective of the puzzle is to create a specific shape with the seven pieces. The shape must contain all seven pieces, which must touch, but may not overlap. Traditional tans were most often made from stone, bone, or clay. Contemporary tangram puzzles are made from plastic, wood, or other modern materials. In this article, the author describes how her class made tangram puzzles using fusable glass.
