Reading for Pleasure? What a Concept!
Ratcliffe, Ann
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v74 n6 p23-24 Feb 2009
As a high school English teacher of 26 years, the author has become increasingly disheartened by the steady decline in the number of students who read for enjoyment. To reverse this trend, she has instituted a program entitled the Reading Round Table. Repeated monthly, the benefits of the Reading Round Table are many. Students enjoy sharing with just one peer at a time, and the author's limited-English students are far less intimidated at the prospect of speaking. Without the onus of the dreaded book report and given the freedom to make any selection from her classroom collection or the media center, students are learning that losing themselves in a good book can, indeed, be enjoyable.
